We believe the future of footwear is biocircular
Achieving it would require far more than incremental improvements or replacing a few materials. It meant redesigning the product from the ground up. From materials and manufacturing to take-back and composting.
Six years later, SOLK is proof that exceptional footwear can be built to last and made to fade.
A lifetime in footwear. A new vision for its future.
For David Solk, footwear has never just been a profession. His father's factory was where he first learned the value of craftsmanship, quality, and creating products that people would wear every day.
Together with Irmi Kreuzer, they would go on to spend more than thirty years designing and producing footwear for some of the world's leading brands, building a shared belief that great shoes deserve a better ending.
But experience also revealed the industry's greatest challenge: what happens when a shoe reaches the end of its life. Inspired by the world they would leave to their daughter, they founded SOLK to prove there was a better way. Six years later, that vision becomes a complete biocircular system, connecting every stage of a shoe's life, from creation to return.
The inspiration was personal. The ambition was always much bigger.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
Three principles that drive everything we do
01
A shoe is not just a product.
It's a system.
Great products should be designed for their entire lifecycle. We designed the ending first, then built the shoe to fit it. Every material, every bond, every component is chosen so the whole thing can come apart and return safely. The product and the system are the same thing.
02
Better products come from
asking difficult questions.
A proprietary midsole foam. Compostable lace tips. Engineered knit constructions. Materials developed and refined to meet requirements that did not previously exist. Every time the material we imagined was still waiting to be created, we take it as an invitation to build something better.
03
Quality comes from
understanding every step.
We built our own factory because the system we envisioned requires full care over every stitch, every bond, every material choice. One roof means complete transparency. It means knowing exactly what goes into every shoe, and knowing exactly what comes out. The factory is the system.
THE JOURNEY
Six years in the making
2019
After decades in footwear, David and Irmi begins researching what it would take to make a shoe that could safely return to the earth. The answer: everything would have to change.
2020
Material development begins. The search for existing materials proves limited, early experiments materials fail. To succeed, new materials will need to be created.
2021
The decision to build a factory. Full control over every material and process means building under one roof.
2022
Lack of composting standards for footwear led to us to create our own. Composting trials begin shredding prototype shoes with organic matter in the German countryside. Early results are promising.
2023
From developing Fade Foam™ to engineering compostable lace tips and components, every element was reconsidered. Even the smallest details demanded months of development, testing and refinement.
2024
Fade 101 is refined through months of wear testing, with every detail challenged and improved. Fade 201 follows, completing SOLK's first collection - footwear designed from the ground up to perform beautifully in wear and return at the end of its life.
2025
SOLK launches. The products are real. The system is live. The work has only just begun.
2026
The journey continues with international awards including the iF Design Award, Green Product Award and ISPO recognising SOLK's commitment to exceptional product design and biocircular innovation.
