Designed to return.
Shoes that live well with you, then return safely to earth.
From your feet to the ground
It starts as a shoe made for real life: walking, weather, movement, pressure, dirt, scuffs and all the marks that come with everyday use. Compost-capable does not mean fragile. SOLKs are built to last, to be worn for years, and to age with the person wearing them. But durability is only the first part of the story. A SOLK is also designed with its end in mind. When your shoes have done their miles, they should not disappear into a bin, a landfill or a forgotten corner of the closet. They are made to come back.
Returning your SOLKs is the most important step in the cycle. Once we receive them, we take care of the rest. The shoes are processed through our return system, so the materials can begin their next phase safely and intentionally. That is what makes the system work: a shoe that is made to last, made to be worn, and made to return when its first life is complete.
Why it can be composted
Every component in a SOLK shoe is chosen to safely return to the earth. Here's what the shredder reveals, and why each piece belongs in the compost
Chrome-Free Leather
No heavy metals. Tanned in Germany. Biodegrades naturally like any organic hide.
Natural Rubber
Tapped from trees. Returns to the earth the way it came, as an organic material.
Fade Foam™
Developed in-house to be both cushioning and compost-safe. Engineered to break down.
Plant-Based Fibers
Lining, laces, aglets, all from natural or biobased sources. No hidden plastics.
